Some Uses of the Word Slot
The term Slot refers to a variety of words with the same grammatical function: an interior opening or assignment in a copy desk. A chief copy editor occupying this slot might have a job at the Gazette. A slot-shaped authorization from an airport’s air-traffic authority may mean that a plane is authorized to land in the airport’s runway. However, it can also refer to a person. Here are some uses of the word Slot:
A slot can map to several words or phrases, either of which can be mapped to entities. For example, the entity value of New York could have synonyms such as Big Apple, NYC, and others. You can add synonyms for a slot value by checking the Allow Synonyms checkbox. You can then enter the name of the slot type in the adjacent Enter synonym field. Then, you can use that synonym in any utterance.
Another term for a slot is expansion slot. The word expansion slots is often used to refer to an opening in a computer that enables you to add new hardware. The original slot was introduced in 1997 by the Intel Corporation. AMD followed suit in 1999 with Slot A, but it is not compatible with the original Slot. Slots have also replaced bays, which are locations inside a computer where disk drives are installed. These are located either in the front or back of the computer.
